Traverse City, MI — July 27, 2025 — A shocking stabbing incident at the Walmart on US-31 sent waves of panic through the Traverse City community late Saturday afternoon. Local authorities confirmed that one individual was injured and a suspect is now in custody.
The incident occurred around 4:30 PM, prompting an immediate police and EMS response. According to eyewitnesses, a verbal altercation between two individuals near the electronics section quickly escalated, leading one man to pull out a knife and stab the other.
Shoppers described the scene as “chaotic,” with several people fleeing the aisles and employees rushing to secure the area.
"I heard screaming and then saw a man on the ground clutching his side," said Michelle Larson, who was shopping nearby. "Security rushed in, and then the police were there within minutes."
Victim in Stable Condition
Authorities report that the victim, a 34-year-old male, was transported to Munson Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. He is currently in stable condition, according to hospital officials.
The suspect, a 28-year-old male whose identity has not yet been released, was quickly detained by Walmart security and handed over to the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office.
No Ongoing Threat
“There is no ongoing threat to the public,” said Lt. Andrew Weller of the Sheriff’s Office during a press briefing. “This appears to be an isolated incident, and we’re actively investigating the motive behind the attack.”
Investigation Ongoing
Police are currently reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses. Charges are expected to be filed within the next 24 hours.
Walmart issued a brief statement expressing concern for the victim and thanking local law enforcement for their swift response:
“We are cooperating fully with the investigation and our thoughts are with the individual affected. The safety of our customers and employees is our top priority.”
The store temporarily closed after the incident but is expected to reopen Sunday morning following a security review.
